Check out this recording of a Side Event panel at the 2nd Session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. In 2023 Prof MB was invited to speak on a panel focusing on African Traditional Religions in the Diaspora and the UN Declaration on the Rights of People of African Descent. Dr. Moffett-Bateau has been an Orisha devotee for almost fifteen years, and she was initiated more than ten years ago. They are an Olosha and Priest of Shango. Her godparents are Iya Asabi Agonogolou and Baba Willie Ilari Oba Ramos. While this is a private part of Dr. MB’s life, they occasionally make exceptions depending on the public speaking request.

This lecture focuses on the unexpected places that politics shows up in our lives. From the food we eat, to the apartments we choose, to the books we read, the political is embedded in every choice that we make. Lecture attendees can expect to walk away with a new understanding of “the political” and a creative set of strategies for making a difference in their lives and communities.
The Role of Neighborhood, Race and Class in Shaping Our Politics
As indicated in the title, this lecture examines the role the neighborhoods we grow up in, as well as race and class, play in how we think about and participate in politics. Lecture attendees can expect to walk away thinking more critically about political feelings and opinions whose origins they’d previously never thought about.

The Intersection of Race, Sex, and Class Based Discrimination in Medical Settings
For folks who are interested in learning more about the harm that can be perpetuated by medical providers within the medical industrial complex, this lecture will be illuminating. I pull from the latest research in both the medical literature, and the social science literature, to speak to the insidious discrimination that shows up time and time again in medical settings. Using my own experience, as well as the experiences of other women who’ve written about the harm perpetuated against them by doctors in various op-ed’s and memoirs, I provide a first person account that will leave you shocked, but motivated to push for change.
